Qatar Museum Authority, who sponsored the event and is apparently happy to see their cash go up in smoke. Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, the artist responsible for pyrotechnics at the Beijing Olympics, spent two months and 8000 shells to create what he calls “A Meditation on Life and Death – The Black Ceremony”.
Cai is a poster boy for the amazing Chinese peasant art movement. In 2010, he created Cai Guo-Qiang: Peasant Da Vincis which presented works from peasants in China.
I have never seen it live. But I once saw an impressive exhibition of his explosive paintings on paper at the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain. And his clay peasants.
