Positive Thinking = Make Belief ???

Nice article on optimism and staying positive…Something I need to work on.

into mind

I often get the feeling that many people still underestimate the value of positive thinking and optimism. Some even think it’s similar to brainwashing: even if you managed to convince yourself that everything is and will be great, it wouldn’t get you anywhere, it’s all just pretend. How sad… Fortunately, psychologists have gathered lots and lots of data to show that a positive mindset makes a huge difference and leads to measurably more achievements and other good stuff. Here’s why:

Two common criticisms of optimism:

“Being optimistic is not going to change anything, you can’t just pretend everything will work out, you’d be lying to yourself.”

“I’d rather expect things to go badly to save myself from disappointment.”

Neither of the above sentiments are helpful. Psychological research has shown time and time again…

  1. Positive thinking does lead to more success/ good outcomes
  2. Negative thinking makes good outcomes less likely

  3. Jenny, I have so many unopened e-mails due to having had strep throat and brochitis these past few days (there is nothing like the germs you pick up in the children’s section of B & N. ha. ha. ) Anyhow I randomly opened one of your great posts and this is the first one I opened. Could it be serendipity ; ) because I was just contemplating the “big plans one” It’s so easy to say someone is already writing the next big book, already making cupcakes, etc but that kind of thinking really does hold you back. I find that when you just something you completely love and do it to the highest of your abilities and are not comparing yourself to others that that is when things start to flow. Thanks for posting this. I’ll take this as a positive sign to go forth with my big plans by taking small steps. And I’m going to put it on pinterest.
    Cheers from snowy Albany.

      1. Thanks so much for the advice. Very kind of you. I actually started a dream board last year (when my husband and I wanted to move) and we put things that we thought we would like in a new place. Wow! Does that thing work. Our move didn’t nail everything we wanted, but a lot of things that we did want in a new place we got. I wanted mountains and boy did we get them ; )

      3. I swear those boards are scary, but in a good way! We never know what abundance is out there until we start shaping our vision of what we want.
