“If there is not enough for what we want or have, there must be a million of unwanted graces somewhere.  My artworks are off the throw away-culture that the world ship to the periphery, my country. We are all living human beings consuming that could result destruction. Somehow, intend to reciprocate the action, give back to life, and recycle.” ~said Michelle Hollanes Lua

The knowledge that the items used in Ms. Lua’s art, if they were not saved by her would be sitting in a trash bin is what drives her to create unique pieces. It can be broken shoes, belts and bags. Fiber glass cast, epoxy, metal beads, garbage’s from throw away culture. As you see in her sculpture titled “Broke Bag Mountain.”

There is one common link in all works of salvage art – each one is a type of visual remix so that everyone would think out of the box about the context of materials.

Contemporary artists like Ms. Lua salvage materials for many reasons to make statements about consumer societies. To create works that speaks to their resourcefulness as an artist. Embracing sustainability or, to inspire others to practice creative re-use. And to add interest to their creations by incorporating materials that have a back story. Lua’s salvage materials in her art because they all have a story behind them.

Ms. Lua’s sculpture depicts women in a variety of roles and situations.  Her sculptures are representations of women as objects of subjugation. Works magnifies the psychological and emotional aspects of an urban women’s life as nurturers, caregivers, and providers of hope. In a world teeming with discord, violence and unjustified welfare, her mixed media world, thoughts become as visible as reality and the evolutionary metamorphosis is both comical and brutal.

“I am after stories inside those bags. If you have a shoe, you have a story. From squeaky-clean and shiny to scuffed and soiled, I want them all.  These branded things are my representation against women trafficking and a statement of women empowerment.” ~said Michelle Hollanes Lua

Ms. Lua’s “Retokada” deals with the loss of physical beauty as aging sets in.  It shows a woman clothed in intricate metal pulling up her breasts. To signify an attempt to recapture lost youth.

Jonathan Benitez: Mixed Media Collage Art and Environmental Art

“My art narrates the relationship between man and nature, his fragility and impermanence.”

With the belief that the artist must train not only his eye but also his soul. “I always absorb new knowledge and information through various media. With the advent of internet, it’s now easier to get information about anything related to my art. I am a believer of new theories and disciplines in art,” as Jonathan Benitez points out about his uniqueness as a visual artist.

His guiding principle is to answer the question: “how can I express the spirit of this age?”

His strong obsession with figures and how they are affected by economic turmoil, poverty, corruption, globalization, natural calamities, and environmental serves as inspiration for his work. Together with his hometown’s plush vegetation—inhabited with greeneries and wildlife made him realized how happy he is living in harmony with the beauty of nature and man.

As the artist confers, it’s hard to prophesized how they will survive as each is consuming the other. His aim is to offer the viewers an alternative point of view to an art experience while showing the delicacies of human conditions and the effects of their behavior on life’s impermanence and fragility.

Benitez collage is a discourse on advertising whose single handiness aspiration is to capture the minds of the viewer by showing a false truth—to express questions of circumstances, displacement and obscured identity, what better platform could there be than the nature of assemblage in collage? Figurative artifacts are laid bare while debatable situations construct parallel universes. The mundane falls in rhythm with the offbeat bordered in conscious composition such as vivid yet surreal landscapes are employed at the hands of the artist.

His first foray in the arts was when he was 10; he came across Vicente Manansala’s watercolor on watercolor paper, “Candle Vendors,” at the back cover of a 1982 issue of Readers Digest—the structured composition and the semi-figurative method of the neutral colors made the depiction honest and truthful. All these hit Benitez hard in a semi-conscious way. Instantaneously, he turned Manansala as his art icon. With an uncle tutoring him on the techniques of watercolor painting and charcoal drawing, Benitez tried to capture the National Artist’s indigenous cubism style as they vividly echoed the Filipino experience.

Primarily interested in becoming an Engineer, Jonathan Benitez left his course to pursue art after her elder sister gifted him with oil paints. Born in Iligan City, Mindanao and now a Puerto Princesa native is pure talent and resourcefulness, noted for taking everyday objects and integrating them in his inceptions to make up for lack of available materials.

Artist Statement:

“I am not a natural born skillful gifted painter like so many artists out there who spends long hours painting realistically and filled with accurate details. However, I do not feel guilty when my simple artworks slugs their way to being adopted first and hung somewhere. I take comfort that me too spends a lot of time thinking and revising my artworks until I am finally satisfied. I spend more time revising, patching and repairing my art. MOSTLY, the colors because whenever I apply paint the first time; I always feel it was a problem – to be solved or edited. I don’t know if it’s a disorder of obsessiveness and compulsiveness.”
