Gladys creates her paintings to reflect positive emotions as her name suggests, Glad. For Gladys, creating abstract art is an expressive means to channel creative energy with positive feelings. Her art embodies the artist visions, her dreams, and her energy. She is inspired by the vibrancy of energy and the connection around the universe and the beauty of pure nature.

“I enjoy expressing positive feelings with layers and depth of colors, playing with curves and highlights of gold. I mostly use acrylics and play with mixed media and oil once in a while.”

Her abstract paintings are inspired by the visual clues in nature and eternalized with spirit and impulsiveness from emotions within. Gladys uses acrylic glazing technique giving light and life to her paintings. The resulting works are emotive and suggests fluid movement, creating energy on the canvas with a wonderful tactile quality. The ambiance of the painting is poignant and pulsating in colour.

Abstract art is a contemporary style of painting that reveals a visual language unique to every abstract artist. While some non-representational abstract art can be disordered and chaotic, Gladys works represents nature and a larger connection to the universe. For Gladys, creating abstract art is an expressive means to channel creative energy with positive message that reflects upon a higher vision. While exploring through the abstract painting process, Gladys searches for a rhythm in the moment to find a creative expression that communicates a balance and a beauty within.

For Gladys, abstract art can convey energy that awakens your emotions and the creative mind. Using her sense of intuition, she is able to create these abstract paintings with vibrant colors, waves of light and layered movement to awaken the senses and transform their environment giving positive harmonious energy.

“I want to have my paintings induce positive feelings from whoever is viewing them. Make them stop, have the eyes wonder on the colors and curves on the canvas, then step back, smile and look again.”

Imagine yourself entering a room when you are in a bad mood. And upon you viewing a particular artwork on display in that room; you start to feel some happy emotions kicking in and soon you find yourself smiling and laughing instead of frowning.

It’s a work of art that alters your mood in a good way. Her paintings have the power to alter the energy within the room that it has been placed in because they enhance positive energy vibrations and overall well-being. All her works give that effect, all due to differential energy wavelengths and frequencies that convey different feelings and meanings to the observer.

“Moving forward, I am looking to create more happiness through my art and share with the rest of the world.”

Rica Barba’s Cyborg Art

RICA BARBA’S CYBORGS & AESTHETICS

To get a better understanding of Maricar Reyes Barba’s (Pseudonym “Rica Barba”) cyborg art. It is necessary to know the general concepts. A cyborg is a single self regulating system. It includes two different domains. One is natural and the other is artificial – organic or mechanical binary objects. Cyborg only exists as this union of supposed opposites.

The use of prosthetic and other techno sciences is the primary focus. The idea of the cyborg extends down to the micro level of artificial life. In some important ways, one can define a human machine cyborg as a creature modified.

Art is harder to define than cyborg. The art creation process is a languishing practice. For it implies making meaning with materials — or better yet, making material meaning. Art differs from discursive language. In that, it does not send meaning through sets of codes. The transmission is through form and content that makes sense to the psyche. The meaning is  actualized. In time, space, body and matter. It is a sensual and aesthetic experience to the viewer.

One could argue that there are still codes involved. The codes of language discourse are formal in most respects. It is a narrative, logical, and experimental. The codes there are in art seem to be somewhere between explanations. After the fact, publicity, and wishful guessing of interpretations.

Filipina Artist Rica Barba participated in Muntinlupa Group of Artist Art Group Show for Typhoon Yolanda at the Espeleta Mansion Level 1, Susana Heights, Muntinlupa City.

The striking thing about cyborgs and art is that the implications of their intersections. Cyborg art is art that interrogates. The intimate relationships between the human body and technology.

Rica Barba’s biomechanical and futuristic digital artworks and paintings are notable for its grace. Its proportion of the human and nonhuman creatures. Her androids, cyborgs, robots and fantasy aliens of homeostatic systems.

As cited by the artist: “They are my visions of ecstasy, enthrallment and transformation. Depicting worlds which often have the dreamlike qualities of nightmares or secret longings fulfilled. There’s a concern for the beauty of the naked human form. A beauty sometimes enhanced by my liquefied chrome. My translucent narrative fractal outer space background and skin. Creating three dimensional depth and light. My steampunk and biomechanical out of these world creatures was the realm of my senses. My art came to me as an expression of both exotic and erotic imagery.”

Rica’s works of art is instinctive. Her conscious aim is to create some sort of visual impact to the viewer. Ideas for her artworks will sometimes come to her when she is half asleep. Though some of them are full blooded products of her dreams and imagination.

“As for me, my private obsession coupled with raw talent of creativity. My determination to master the technicalities of the craft. Makes her a unique artist, Rica said.”

Rica Barba’s Self-Portrait

A VISUAL ARTIST THAT THINKS THREE DIMENSIONAL

Rica uses 3D software in her renderings and think in three dimensions. It is the way this artist views the world – not in flat surfaces but in depth. 3D applications provide her polygon tools. This is where she manipulates simple shapes into one that are multifaceted. Using such techniques as extrusion. Pulling the shape out of its base points to create a 3D model. Her canvas is a direct representations of her reality. Her subjects are lit, shadowed, colored, textured and defined just as they are in the real world.

RICA’S CREATIVE INSPIRATION

Born December 1, 1976 in Estancia, Iloilo, Rica’s ambition had always been to be an artist. A graduate of BS Psychology in West Visayas State University in Iloilo City. A self taught visual artist, she did not receive any sort of artistic training. She said, her grandfather, Rev. Restituto Ortigas, was her greatest art influence. The one that provided her books with rich and vibrant colours which enhanced her art visions at an early age. Since then, she made paintings in oil and acrylic. Experimenting with other mediums. Later finding her niche doing three dimensional digital artworks.

Rica Barba’s Self Portrait

ART JOURNEY & STRUGGLES

She began her art career when she moved from her hometown last 2009 to Muntinlupa City. Where she currently resides. Landed a job as Sales Coordinator. At Prime Sales Incorporated of Prime Group of Companies in Taguig City. She became involved in administrative dept and finance. Later promoted as the company president’s secretary. She worked and managed group exhibitions, multitasking her job and arts at the same time.

A freak accident happened last 2014. Where she had a severe patellar knee dislocation and a lumbar and spinal disc fracture. Which affected her mobility, thus forced her to resign from work. Difficult months followed where she can’t even stand up without help. She underwent operation and was on a cast for almost six months while seeking therapy. Her accident left her knee deformed and now walks with a cane.

The disability made a negative impact in her life. During her dark days, she struggled to relate her art to people close to her. It seemed like she was in a jungle in which psychiatrists were hunting for wolves and snakes. But she never gave up her art. She fought her biggest enemy, none other than herself.

“I made my art as my refuged. Wherein I definitely see my digital works and paintings as my means of communication. Social media became my channel of expression. I am a conceptual futurist, a term I used because it offers a hint of the scope of my abilities,” said Rica.

Merlito “Noy” Gepte: Award Winning Filipino Sculptor

Inspiration for Filipino sculptor, Merlito Gepte, comes from a variety of sources in his life. Politics, ordinary lives of Filipinos, and the human anatomy have all been important in the development of his intricate work. The artist behind the statue has earned many recognition and awards in the Philippines for his meticulous movement of his skillful hands that he honors the female form.

Gepte’s artistic influences came from Michelangelo, Bernini, and especially his father who was a craftsman and artist who specialized in making figurines.  His early recollection of his childhood in Pampanga was his time with his father tutoring him his skill of sculpture creation. As a kid, he would watch his father make religious statues and teaching his own students arts and crafts—little did his father would know that his son will follow his footsteps and be a multi-awarded artist.

According to Gepte, he considers himself a late bloomer despite his early groundwork with his father. Unaware of the robust art community and the business of art-making, he only entered the scene as a professional artist in his 50s. Just like his father, his work as a production designer for an export company and as a teacher, used up most of his time for many years. Not until a chance meeting with artist, Seb Chua (who I featured here and here), began a series of circumstances that will lead him to the life of unsullied art that he was always meant to be.

#MerlitoGepte Award Winning #FilipinoSculptor #Sculture #ArtPH www.jennysserendipity.com

Through the backing and assistance of Chua, Gepte slowly found his way in the art world. By attending art exhibits and charting the creatives allowed him to appreciate himself in the context of the present-day contemporary art scene. Despite his lacking of formal fine arts training that was enjoyed by most artists, his phenomenal works attest that true artistic beauty is beyond educational merits.

Highly versatile Gepte hand-carves outstanding variety of characters and they take hundreds of hours to complete. The artist uses hand tools that have been almost completely eliminated by modern machines, creating a link between past and present.

Gepte approaches the figure as a vehicle to create the misapprehension of reality by striving for technical mastery of the human figure. He continues to study the human body in order to present a marriage of the face and body in an attempt to communicate mood and emotional expression. Gepte’s works are in classical realist style with contemporary inspiration.

The artist in his studio.

In crafting his sculptures, Gepte’s hands take on a life of its own, the body in motion; the exquisite balance between the expression of the face and the expression of the hands and, are of great personal significance to create a great masterpiece. He molds and kneads the clay to form delicate pieces that never fails to capture the striking fragility to tell a story of the human condition in all its grandeur.

“Tiinz” Taruc Impressionistic Art

“I went to The Louvre Museum in Paris in the early 1980’s and I fell in love with impressionist painting. Since then, the rest is history.”

Maria Cristina Valencia Taruc or “Tiinz” Taruc for short is a Filipina master painter whose art is fresh and modern. The vivid color she uses is bright and her brush stroke is loose and freely comes from her soul as described by local art critic Gigi Cortez Balmaceda.

The artist is famous for her impressionism paintings such as her sunflowers, koi fishes, landscapes, Mother and Child series and her social realism modern style portraits. Tiinz Taruc art is contemporary and is reminiscent of Georgia O’Keefe style flower paintings while her beautiful landscape paintings and the changing effects of light are evocative of Van Gogh and Monets.

Impressionist artists were characterized by their visual impact influenced by nature and love for the environment. Such artist sought to depict whatever they happened to see at a given moment by using pure, broken and often unmatched color to achieve an appearance of improvisation. They usually painted ordinary everyday subjects and omitted detail in their subjects to create a striking overall effect.

Born in Tarlac and is a granddaughter of the late Huk Supremo Luis Taruc, founder and leader of the Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa mga Hapon (Hukbalahap or Huk) from 1942 to 1954, after he led an insurgency group fighting for land reform even earlier in the 1930’s. Tinz Taruc is an impressionist whose paintings have been inspired by Philippine patriotism and Hukbalahap stories, a trait she is believed to have inherited from her grandfather.

Balmaceda noted that Maria Cristina studied visual arts and graphic design at the Parsons School of Design in New York City and became “a prodigy of masters Rafael Maniago and Bienvenido Sibug in Los Angeles, and also learned from Aris C Bagtas of Marilao, Bulacan.”

Tiinz is a prolific painter and her paintings have given her hope and life. She added that art helps her deal with the love she lost and face reality with a positive outlook. She will be coming back to the Philippines from New York City and Los Angeles to have her 5th Art Exhibition in Pampanga in December 1, 2015 showcasing her “Mother & Daughter” series.

Surreal Impressionist Portraits by Camille Dela Rosa—“The Enchantress Series”

Camille Dela Rosa is a contemporary artist born in 1982 in Santa Cruz, Manila. As a daughter of the late renowned painter Ibarra Y. Dela Rosa and Ethel Dimacuha, a retired Humanities Professor who is also a visual artist; it could be said that Camille was destined to be an artist.

Because of her natural born talent and artistic skills when it comes to painting, Art Critic Cid Reyes dubbed her as the “Youngest impressionist painter in the Philippines” during her time.

At 16, the talented self-taught artist learned how to paint and used her father’s style of art in her early exhibits and previous paintings as an inspiration.

A prolific artist who has exhibited in places in Europe and Asia and has also curved a path of experimentation who sought to paint the surreal, morbid and the macabre of the world. Her works oozing with mystical, esoteric and occult symbolism.

If the saying “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is universally acceptable, it can thus be said that there’s real beauty in the “morbid” canvases of Camille Dela Rosa.

Her creations have been a way of exploring the shadowy places existing within her imagination, a story to be told and to be experienced. Her exhibit in 2009 “Aenigma” and last year’s “Reina Imperium” at the Art Underground explored on the dark recesses of humanity’s soul.

“The Enchantress Series” of surreal portraits which highlights her realistically-rendered subjects on the strength of the women in their powerful roles as mothers, warriors, and queens—a veiled woman nursing a large rabbit as if it was her child, or an image of a woman’s head as the foundation of a Corinthian column decked with cherubs. It is a practice that is quite appealing and striking, yet expressive and haunting.

Camille Dela Rosa is one artist who uses her commanding talents to remind us that although women must never be exteriorized, their beauty and innate power should also be continually celebrated. The series reflects women’s lives and experiences, as well as to change the foundation for the production and reception of how women are being perceived.

A classically trained singer from the College of Music of the University of the Philippines with mix of experiences and spellbinding background is exemplified in the quality of her painting masterpieces.

Jonathan Benitez: Mixed Media Collage Art and Environmental Art

“My art narrates the relationship between man and nature, his fragility and impermanence.”

With the belief that the artist must train not only his eye but also his soul. “I always absorb new knowledge and information through various media. With the advent of internet, it’s now easier to get information about anything related to my art. I am a believer of new theories and disciplines in art,” as Jonathan Benitez points out about his uniqueness as a visual artist.

Artwork by Jonathan Benitez, Palawan based Filipino Artist. Image used with permission.

His guiding principle is to answer the question: “how can I express the spirit of this age?”

His strong obsession with figures and how they are affected by economic turmoil, poverty, corruption, globalization, natural calamities, and environmental serves as inspiration for his work. Together with his hometown’s plush vegetation—inhabited with greeneries and wildlife made him realized how happy he is living in harmony with the beauty of nature and man.

As the artist confers, it’s hard to prophesized how they will survive as each is consuming the other. His aim is to offer the viewers an alternative point of view to an art experience while showing the delicacies of human conditions and the effects of their behavior on life’s impermanence and fragility.

Benitez collage is a discourse on advertising whose single handiness aspiration is to capture the minds of the viewer by showing a false truth—to express questions of circumstances, displacement and obscured identity, what better platform could there be than the nature of assemblage in collage? Figurative artifacts are laid bare while debatable situations construct parallel universes. The mundane falls in rhythm with the offbeat bordered in conscious composition such as vivid yet surreal landscapes are employed at the hands of the artist.

His first foray in the arts was when he was 10; he came across Vicente Manansala’s watercolor on watercolor paper, “Candle Vendors,” at the back cover of a 1982 issue of Readers Digest—the structured composition and the semi-figurative method of the neutral colors made the depiction honest and truthful. All these hit Benitez hard in a semi-conscious way. Instantaneously, he turned Manansala as his art icon. With an uncle tutoring him on the techniques of watercolor painting and charcoal drawing, Benitez tried to capture the National Artist’s indigenous cubism style as they vividly echoed the Filipino experience.

Primarily interested in becoming an Engineer, Jonathan Benitez left his course to pursue art after her elder sister gifted him with oil paints. Born in Iligan City, Mindanao and now a Puerto Princesa native is pure talent and resourcefulness, noted for taking everyday objects and integrating them in his inceptions to make up for lack of available materials.

Joel Chavez, Contemporary Realist Filipino Painter

Joel Chavez has a slightly different idea of Renaissance portraiture than the average artist. He has this contrasting idea of what a contemporary portraiture art making should be. This artist whose first solo exhibition was recently exhibited at the Art Underground Gallery in Mandaluyong City called “Redeeming the Rebirth,” who paints wonderful portraits in Renaissance style, but with eye-catching modern and contemporary touches.

His artworks are an astonishing symbolic realism and for all the seeming influences of Renaissance Masters—Caravaggio and the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer; both who belong to a Revival Period of light and shadow are also strong influences to the art of modern Filipino artist, Joel Chavez.

These paintings make us think about what the Renaissance masters would think if they could see the world today. Chavez’s cultivates a mature stroke of art form that only a great master can achieve. His art has depth and self-control in which each painting has strong kinship to the artist of the Enlightenment period, thinkers who embodied its ideas.

“Symmetry of Glamour,” denotes the detachment between outward appearances and inward splendor while as for “Eyes are Windows to the Soul,” Chavez puts a diamond across the eyes of the woman to portray the beauty within.

“Solemnity of an Aristocrat” has a red dot painted on the nose of a well-dressed turbaned man signifies a paragon of wealth to aristocrats is as important as a sentient.

The choice of his copiousness of characters combined with the sublime techniques marks the 24-year-old artist as a painter to watch for. Chavez is a product of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) who hales from Sana Mesa, Philippines.

P-Noise 2015: Darrel Dan D. Lagasca—Filipino Visual Artist

Darrel Dan D. Lagasca’s paintings feature a multifarious layering of images and styles, symbolic of the multidimensional identity of our Filipino heritage. Darrel’s work exemplifies this intricacy through the connection between the East and West, the highs and lows of cultural perception, the old and young, the past and present.

Diverse and eclectic, his art challenges the viewer to consider current ideas and rethink the familiar. He gives voice to the varied and changing cultural landscape of identity, values, and beliefs of what is old and new. He explores ideas, concepts, questions, and practices that examine the past, describe the present, and imagine the future.

Kevin Villar Cubinar of “Black ART”

“I try to give people a different way of looking at their surroundings. That’s art to me.”

Social art or frequently referred to as “social-practice,” typically focuses on work that impacts societies’ problems like poverty, inequality, pollution, politics and the impact of religion amongst its own people. Kevin Villar Cubinar’s artworks tends to display a strong sociological and political bent, often in an effort to draw attention to collective ills and conditions which are meant to encourage empowerment or incite change in a community. His art is in the intent to change the narrative of today’s neglect.

Kevin is a young talented Filipino artist whose areas of interest are in portraiture, painting and working on murals. Currently a graduating student of Architecture and when not in school; has participated in Petron Painting Competition, Shell Art Painting Competition, GSIS Painting Competition and most recently, at the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE). He said he was inspired by the vision of joining art competitions because of its commitment to nation-building for a better world.

He is also an active member of A3 Artist Three Art Group—Three individuals taking the same road namely; RC Delabajan Camarines, Kevin Villar Cubinar, and Lorenz Richard Besana Bactong.

Perhaps soon, Kevin will be amongst the first Filipino artist whose artistic efforts will spur change and revitalization in a better world amongst all Filipinos here and overseas….He is indeed one to watch for.

Artist Statement:

“I am not a natural born skillful gifted painter like so many artists out there who spends long hours painting realistically and filled with accurate details. However, I do not feel guilty when my simple artworks slugs their way to being adopted first and hung somewhere. I take comfort that me too spends a lot of time thinking and revising my artworks until I am finally satisfied. I spend more time revising, patching and repairing my art. MOSTLY, the colors because whenever I apply paint the first time; I always feel it was a problem – to be solved or edited. I don’t know if it’s a disorder of obsessiveness and compulsiveness.”
