Meet Sky De Leon Child Prodigy Painter

Meet #SkyDeLeon #ChildProdigy #Painter www.jennysserendipity.com #VisualArtist #FilipinoArtist #Art #ArtPH #ContemporaryArts #Impressionism #Realism

Artist at work who can paint one painting a day.

A rage to master as observed in some precocious young artists may help define extreme visual creativity in spotting artistic brilliance in children. Among all child prodigies there is one particular trait that children share: passion about their interest – whether it is in painting, sports, math, science or even dance.

Despite his young age, Ram Skyler De Leon or “Sky” has already distinguished himself as a professional artist. Sky can make one oil painting a day, his stress buster after school. I am passionate about art!” he enthuses. Shy is an artist who has an obsession to master his craft, devouring art books and religiously studying with local experts.

“It’s a great honor to be an artist. Art for me is not just a hobby but a passion. Painting became my escape and my inspiration to do well in school. We all live in a busy and complicated world but art simplifies it. God gave me this wonderful gift and my family has supported me throughout my journey in art. I hope to create more and better paintings or works of art in the future.”~Sky De Leon

Looking at kid’s compositions, it won’t take you much to conclude that he comprehends far beyond his age. His reflection about art, his brushstroke and mature demeanor across the canvas at such a tender age is certainly a gifted realist.  His elements of composition, color, space and movement are handled with greater sensitivity to detail.

The fifteen-year old boy’s paintings are no child’s play for this 2nd year high school honor student from La Salle Greenhills who started art as early as six years old.

Ram Skyler de Leon and Master Artist, Fernando Sena at Walls Gallery

He first studied art basics with acclaimedFernando Sena in 2010 and had several exhibits through him, in venues including Philippine Heart Center, Eastwood Cinema in Libis, and Walls and Art Gallery in Quezon Avenue while contemporary Filipino artist Philip Badon has also helped in shaping Sky’s art.

His comprehensive art education and as well as his exposure to numerous art forms, styles and techniques, finds niche in realism and impressionism through L’arc En Ciel Gallery who is now Sky’s second home in art – a leading art gallery in the country under the tutelage of Elaine Herbosa curator of the L’Arc en Ciel in the South. Sky has also been accepted to the Florence Academy of Art in Italy for next year’s workshop – first Filipino child to be accepted in this prestigious academy.

Sky with Elaine Herbosa, President and Curator of L’Arc En Ciel Art Gallery.

He wields a brush like an art master. His skill in the impressionist still life is a sight to behold – his copper vases, sunflowers and cherries on white silk organza pop to life with his sophisticated strokes. Sky’s oils in bold colors have unending appeal.

Sky was not like most children as he found solace frolicking with vivid colors and various subjects in his paintings. Sky is an artist whose art are often self-directed, preferring art to other forms of entertainment. Sky believes that creating art in general is not an activity but a way of life for him. It teaches him discipline, courage to go beyond his limits, and to aim for perfection for whatever interest him.

“Still life teaches you to find the beauty in simple household objects and portraiture makes you enjoy the perfection of the in perfection,” ~Sky De Leon

Sky has been publicly exhibiting his works since he was 11 years old, starting at the Bahay Tsinoy Museum in Intramuros. He had a solo auction exhibit for the 10th anniversary of The Palms Country Club in Alabang in 2013, where part of the proceeds went to a charitable institution. He has joined Art in the Park two years in a row, ManiaArt 2015, and exhibits in Bellevue Hotel, Tagaytay Highlands, ArtistSpace, Ayala Museum and at L’Arc en Ciel Atelier and Gallery in Ayala Alabang Village.

His rare talent has been featured as Artist of the Week in Solar TV’s morning show, interviewed in other TV programs, and featured in newspapers and magazines. Sky is, after all, just a typical, well-rounded extraordinary talented kid with supportive non-artist parents. His oil paintings have evolved into a more mature depictions and advanced techniques.

“I love what I am doing. It’s very satisfying, seeing a finished work when before there was just a blank canvas,” ~Sky De Leon

Margarita Lim: Filipina Painter & Watercolorist

Watercolor artist Margarita Lim was not a Fine Arts graduate; she was actually an accidental artist who attended an art workshop to help her get over the death of her husband.  During her healing process, she prayed and was guided by her art mentors to join the Kulay sa Tubig watercolor invitational competition.  She was a runner up on her first try and won 3 times and was awarded top 5 and elevated to the Hall of Fame, last December 2014.

As an artist, one strives to show that the ostensibly delicate medium of watercolor can be bold, rich in color and dramatic in execution.  When she paints, she aims to understand and see its beauty and simplicity within its complexity. Her paintings capture the very core of her subject and the viewer’s find themselves lost in the world she has created. Her watercolor paintings express a unique way to creatively represents illusions, expressions, and bright feelings.

When she paints, it is not about what you see at first glance it is more about the emotional connection she brings out whenever she chooses an art subject. Her form is the language, the content is the voice. As every artist, they are here to share their gifts with others; it is a valuable healing experience for her and the observer and her art is what she is born to do. She also does dabble in acrylic but her main medium of choice is watercolor.

Her mentors influenced her to do watercolors.

“Thanks to you Henry when I saw you painting a watercolor portrait, you challenged me to excel in watercolor. The 3 persons who influenced me to do watercolor are Boy Ventura, Rody Herrera & you (Henry Braulio); wouldn’t be here without you guys,” the artist laments.

A resident of Pasig City, Philippines, Lim garners much of her inspiration from the Lord and her fellow artists at the Art Association of the Philippines,” where she currently seats as the secretary of the art organization. She was also chosen as one of the KATORSE Ab Initio group of Filipina artists carving out a space for themselves, dedicated to the craft of visual arts. In a short given time, they were able to organize a group exhibit at Arte Pintura Gallery at the Address Condominium WackWack Road last June 17, 2015. She is at present holding a show at the “Junkshop” Exhibit at Art Center, SM Megamall from Oct 9th to 20th of 2015.

Guia Ty: Watercolorist

Name of Artist:

Guia Ty

Art Form:

Traditional Art – Watercolor

Artist Biography:

I’m Guia Ty, 28 years old, a self-taught watercolor painter who hails from Cavite.

Guia Ty, Filipina-Chinese Watercolorist

I started drawing when I was two – the usual incomprehensible scribbles on the floor and walls of our home. I never took drawing seriously until I was 8 years old when I joined my first contest at school. Since then I only relied on art subject, art club activities, and the school library (internet was for the rich way back 1990’s), to learn about drawing and painting. I continued to learn on my own, practicing every day and discovering how to paint with watercolor. I had to save from my allowance so I could buy what art materials I wanted. It was until second year high school when I first won in an international contest in Hong Kong. I won for three consecutive years.

College life was completely artless, and it continued until I started working. I hardly painted for seven years straight. I would draw occasionally, because it was needed in my profession as a teacher; having creativity and skills in drawing was an advantage. But teaching wasn’t really my passion. I did discover a new found love: writing. I keep journals filled with random thoughts, poetry, until I was able to write short stories. When creativity strikes and I do not have the time nor space to draw, I end up writing until way past midnight.

I stopped working to focus on my master’s degree, but I ended up painting. The last quarter of 2013 was life changing. I was encouraged by a stranger (who happens to be an artist, and eventually became my mentor) that I should try painting a piece every day, and see how my vision was developing. He said I already had the skill; it was time I found myself in what I was doing. At that time I was terribly lost and confused to where my career was going. I did what I could, to think of something new, unique, creative, and try to execute it on paper. I had no knowledge at all of paint and paper brands, I stuck to ordinary student-quality materials that were affordable.

Early 2014 I made a series of four abstractions of women. I entitled them ‘Tetralogy of Fallot’, with each piece expressing unspeakable emotions: Vanity, Melancholy, Obsession, and Emotional Tirades. It represented all the feelings and confusions I had, everything I could not voice out, all demons that I have been fighting within me. I used the idea as motivation and subject of my craft. I finally found what others say ‘signature’ in my craft.

And as any little girl with big dreams, my series were sent to a gallery in Florence and I participated in a group exhibit in Portovenere, Italy last September 2014. And I owe everything to my mentor who helped me, guided me, and supported me.

Doing abstractions wasn’t enough. I continued discovering what I could do, and every day I try to learn something new about painting and what my hands could create. I learned, on my own, the value of artist quality paints and papers, how to store and preserve my works, and even how to frame them carefully. I also discovered a new path for my artistic expression: women and flowers. Still with the same motivation, I started to try and represent emotions through beautiful faces. I try my best to give life to them through their eyes, as if I want to draw the viewer to look closely at my work and make them feel what I am feeling. This new discovery has led my art to be patronized by women like me, who have passion for the arts, beauty, and elegance. My works have been collected by both Filipino and foreign individuals, reaching countries such as Austria, Germany, Malaysia, and Australia.

I still remain as a simple, dreamy girl who aspires so much in life. I still wish to have an exhibit in the Philippines, and maybe teach art someday. Teaching is my profession, art is my passion – to do both would be the best job I could ever have. I use my Instagram account to share my works and encourage young painters to stay away from the mainstream, and try to look in themselves to discover what their creative souls are made of. I hope what I do inspire others to strive on their own and be the best they could be.

Art for Sale: Kevin A Sabino (Painting the Memories of My Childhood)

Next time you want to remember the most memorable moments of your childhood, take a look at these black and white ink paintings by Kevin Sabino. He hails from Tangalan—the 5th municipality in Aklan known for its pristine beauty which nature has bestowed upon it and its people. As an artist, Kevin is able to capture some of life’s most wonderful moments with his beautiful brushstrokes. Painting became for him a tool for reviving his past experiences. He discovered that searching into his past and recounting his stories via painting is a challenging creative process, during which, he finds himself actively involved in remaking, reshaping, and rehearsing all of his past—the cliff villages, bancas by the river (boats), the big white house by the beach, kite flying, the lake, the sea village and so on.

Does these all sound familiar to you?

Ronna Lara-Bes, The Multi-Faceted Artist

The artist would describe herself as multi-faceted, for she has developed skills of seemingly different disciplines. However, one mutual denominator among them is that they all resolve around artistic pursuits. Her art endeavors have dominated her life for as long as she can remember.

Ronna Lara-Bes is an alumnus of Architecture in University of Santo Tomas, a course that helped combined the technical and the creative side of her artistry. Her professional life is dedicated to creativity and the teaching of it. She is a part-time instructor at Feati University School of Fine Arts. Her early years, she saw herself as a fashion designer, then as an architectural visualizer, product designer, 3D Animator, photographer and visual effects artist—An all-around artist!

In the field of traditional art, her choice mediums are oil, acrylics and watercolour. She switches from one to another to keep her perspective constantly fresh, yet continually retaining her unique artistic identity. This is yet another manifestation of her multifaceted nature. Her work is often been described as possessing cleanliness and shades have and having that three-dimensional effect which oftentimes amuses her given her computer graphics background.

Meet Millet Galeos Sacerdoti – An Eclectic Visual Artist

A Virgo from the year of the Earth Rooster, Ramilita “Millet” Fajardo Galeos, who hails from Pasay City, grew up in the busy streets of Paco, Manila. Millet came from a family of doctors, nurses, artists, musicians, accountants and engineers. She was inspired by the tenacity of her late uncle, Zosimo Fajardo Sr. a prolific deaf-mute painter who trained under Fernando Amorsolo. Her first cousin, “Queen of Radio Advertising” Ompong Remigio, elevated to the Hall of Fame of the Philippines Creative Guild, is another inspiration.

Interesting artist! I feel that she is someone you should know.  She is one prolific artist who is active in Manila’s art scene. Shout out to my high school buddy Wam Molina who introduced me to her.  Thank you Wam! (Watch out for a future blog post on Wam’s photography)

Hope you enjoy this post and her art the same way as I did!

Millet Galeos Sacerdoti and her art.

Tell me about yourself as a Freelance Visual Artist and your type of art.

As a self-taught visual artist for more than 25 years; I must say, I haven’t encountered any design task that was too hard to execute, at the same time be able to freely express my style (a feat for most graphic designers and increasingly hard to put into practice due to different client needs and demands).

Not claiming that I’m special or freakishly good at what I do, but I believe that my creativity stems from the way I see things, I was born with epilepsy and bipolar disorder and was left undiagnosed until I was 30. My art possibly falls under so many categories except traditional.

Taken from my art profile – Her love for basic shapes and bright colors, keen eye for detail and future trends, good sense of balance and form and her preciseness of pen and pencil drove her beyond typical expressions, and forms. Her design-sense is contemporary, mostly abstract depictions of life; intricate, comic, pop and psychedelic. Her subjects normally involve love of family and children, biological and natural patterns, hidden messages and puzzles, sex, epilepsy and extreme moods. Her works are done meticulously and intricately, but all in a whim, with no defined plans or studies. Her play of shapes, textures and colors usually deceive the viewer’s eyes. She lets the viewer define and interpret her work the way they want to see it. Millet’s favorite medium is ink. She also uses acrylic, watercolor, colored pencil, graphite, charcoal, oil pastel, markers, crayons and mixed media. She is adept in both conventional and digital media.

Apoplexie Mental Vulgarity by Artist Millet Galeos Sacerdoti

And as an Owner at Apoplexie Art Bar

Apoplexie is French for seizure. Art Bar doesn’t relate exactly to an edifice like a bar or restaurant but more to a shop (in this case, and as of the moment, a virtual shop). I did put up a physical shop in Kapitolyo, Pasig for a multiply.com account; sadly, it didn’t pull through since they closed down. It’s the future of Apoplexie that I am currently planning on. We target to bring Apoplexie back focusing on the arts and music scene, after we build the studio in Tagaytay…the place to build already exists, and my remaining Apoplexie stocks are kept in the bodega. These stocks include mostly of my artworks, preloved clothing and handcrafted fashion accessories, other artists’ paintings, and art collectibles. We’re on planning stage and will start setting up a temporary showroom first and bit by bit build from there. Hoping to open by end 2015 if permitting won’t be cumbersome.

You mentioned you’re SOELAG. What is this?

Soelag is the reverse of my surname Galeos. I use this as my pseudonym for certain art activities that involve live and interactive art, moving art or videography. It’s not my alter ego, it just so happens that when I signed my name before, it reads both as Galeos and Soelag, almost like an ambigram.

Besides you, who are the other featured Apoplexie Art Bar artist?

One of Apoplexie Art Bar’s concepts will be, aside from artists being able to show their works, to accommodate and feature select artists as its resident/stay-in artist for two weeks each month, without repeating the same artist, giving more exposure to new and upcoming artists. That’s all I can say for now since everything is in conceptual stage.

What type of art do you feature at Apoplexie Art Bar?

Any and all types of art (there’s art in trash, but there is also “trash art”- which I am not keen on promoting)

You mentioned your price is cheap?  What are your price ranges?

That price would apply on the fashion part of Apoplexie.

Artworks wise, I believe I’m relatively cheap (not being humble about it nor too happy to say it). Currently, my cheapest artwork would be P500.00 and the most expensive is P120K (which can also mean I don’t plan to sell it, at the moment, or they jacked up my price – hehe). I would like to work on a price per sq. in. list, but when you’re enjoying what you do, it’s really hard to put a price on it. As of now, I keep it low so that more people will have access to my art.

Give me an update on your Art Events?

I’ve been very active lately as Director and founding member of the United Women Artists Association of the Philippines (UWAAP) which is geared towards promoting the female artists, to pursue impeccable craftsmanship, and serve as inspiration to other women artists, both locally and internationally. (Motto eh, I have to write that down, YKWIM) Our organization was founded just this year and only yet has been actively participating ever since its launch and first group exhibit last October in Dos Pueblos Gallery entitled “DiskARTe“.

UWAAP Teaser: DOS PUEBLOS GALLERY Presents…”DISKARTE” The first group exhibition of the UNITED WOMEN ARTISTS ASSOCIATION OF THE PHILIPPINES. Robinsons Magnolia, New Manila, Quezon City

Ongoing exhibits: UWAAP co-organized and I partly sponsored (via Apoplexie Art Bar, GS Tagaytay and SNAFU!) the NBI’s 78th Anniversary Art and Photo Exhibit Opening last 3 November. Exhibit runs until 5 December.

Also, we are participating at the 1st SBMA Women’s Summit entitled “Ang Bagong Pinay” in Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center. We will also hold interactive or live art, on the spot sketching and art demonstration activities this 26-27 November.

Future of your art?

I am at present involving myself more into arts and music-infused fund-raising projects and benefit shows, either as co-organizer or sponsor/patron.  Next year’s activities are already lined-up. Though, I may have to take a backseat midway 2015 to pursue building my own artist haven in Tagaytay.
