Good Luck or Bad Luck? (a Zen koan)

Once upon the time there was an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.

“Perhaps,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “What great luck!” the neighbors exclaimed.

“Perhaps,” replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.

“Perhaps,” answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

“Perhaps,” said the farmer…

It’s okay to have a good time when things go right in our lives but let us not get carried away. Concurrently, when we experience bad luck in our lives, we should not lose control and be wrapped up about it.

Life many surprises are not all about the highs and lows but also bad luck could turn out to be good luck.

Yes, I lost my job. It feels like the biggest slap on my face. The ultimate rejection but when I think about it; there is something better out for me. God knows, I might finally find my true calling. God works on mysterious ways you know.

Zen says: “The Secret to Happiness”
• No to attachment to outcomes.
• Yes to detachment to outcomes.
